Kentucky State Police Investigating Trooper-Involved Shooting in Powell County
Stanton, KY. (February 7, 2022) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Critical Incident Response Team is investigating a trooper-involved shooting that occurred on Feb. 6 at approximately 11:30 p.m. EST in Powell County.
The preliminary investigation indicates that KSP Post 8, the Powell County Sherriff’s Office, and the Stanton Police Department were requested to check the well-being of two individuals at a residence on Cat Creek Road in Powell County. Further information was obtained indicating that a separate subject at the same residence had attempted to shoot one of the individuals in the residence, and an arrest warrant was obtained. Upon arrival, troopers attempted to serve the arrest warrant, but the subject was uncooperative and refused verbal requests to exit the residence. As the situation progressed and during attempted negotiation techniques, the subject set fire to the residence and then emerged from the residence with a firearm shooting in the direction of troopers and officers. A trooper discharged their agency-issued firearm fatally striking the subject, who was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Powell County Coroner.
