Planned work on KY 15 in Knott County will impact travel between Hazard and Whitesburg

Road to be closed on an as-yet-undetermined date

JACKSON, Ky.  – A rockfall hazard removal project under development along KY 15 in Knott County will impact travel between Hazard and Whitesburg in upcoming days.

Engineers and maintenance personnel from District 12 are preparing for a total closure of KY 15 at milepoint 4.1 in Knott County, just north of the KY 160 intersection in the Carr Fork Lake area.

No definite date has yet been set for the closure, but it could come as early as this week and last for one to two days. Site preparation, including building an access road so crews can reach the boulders to be removed, is currently underway. Once crews have access to the rocks, KY 15 will need to be closed for the safety of the traveling public.

Through traffic between Whitesburg and Hazard will be directed to use KY 160 and KY 80 through Hindman. Signs will be posted to alert drivers of the closure and the detour. This route is the best option for through traffic and large trucks.

Drivers may also opt to use KY 7 between Jeff and Isom as an alternate route, but this detour will not be signed.

Details on the project can be found in District 12’s announcement of the work at https://lnks.gd/2/MMRHLw. Updates on the specific closure dates will be available on District 12’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/KYTCD12/. They will be shared on District 10’s Facebook page as well.
