KSP Conducting Fatal Collision Investigation in Letcher County

Making, KY. (August 31, 2020) – On Monday, August 31, 2020, at approximately 10:00 AM, Troopers from Post 13 responded to a two vehicle collision in the Mayking community of Letcher County.

Preliminary investigation indicates David Day, 30, of Whitesburg, was operating a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer south on US 119 when his vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes. The vehicle operated by Day struck a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox traveling north on US 119. The operator of the Equinox, Lowell Ison, 75, of Jeremiah, was fatally injured in the collision. Day was transported to Whitesburg ARH. He was then transferred to Pikeville Medical Center with serious injuries. There were no other passengers involved.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Toxicology results are pending. Kentucky 119 was closed for approximately three hours as KSP reconstructed the collision. The collision is under investigation by Trooper Adam Baker.
