Man Killed in Logging Mishap in Letcher County

Deane, Ky.  (January 11, 2020) – A Knott County man was killed while cutting trees in Letcher County Saturday morning.  Kentucky State Police Post 13 received a call advising of the logging accident at around 8:45 a.m.  Trooper Brandon Watts responded to the scene off of Loves Branch in the Deane community.

The initial investigation determined that subjects were cutting trees when a felled tree became lodged in the top of another tree.  Personnel continued working in the area, when the lodged tree fell to the ground.  One of the workers was struck by the tree as it fell and was fatally injured.  The man was identified as 25 year old David Michael Thomas, of Kite in Knott County.   Letcher County Coroner Renee Campbell responded to the scene and pronounced Thomas deceased.  There were no reports of any other injuries.

An autopsy has been scheduled at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Franfkort.  This incident remains under investigation by Tpr. Brandon Watts with KSP Post 13.
