Fatal Traffic Crash / Whitley County

London, Ky. (July 08, 2019)  On Sunday, July 07, 2019 at approximately 1:13 PM, Kentucky State Police Post 11, London received a report of a three-vehicle traffic collision with severe injuries on Interstate-75 near the two mile marker in Whitley County.

Upon arrival, Trooper Matt Ridener determined that a 2018 Dodge pickup operated by Robert D. Sturtz, 50, of Churubusco, Indiana was traveling northbound when he struck a 2008 Honda passenger car in the rear that was stopped in heavy traffic operated by Adam B. Hyatt, 38, of Frankfort, KY. After the initial impact, Hyatt’s vehicle struck a 2012 Dodge pickup operated by Stephen Riggs, 47, of Upton, KY.

Preliminary investigation indicates that all northbound lanes of I-75 was slowing or stopped at the time of the collision due to heavy traffic volume.

Hyatt was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Sturtz was transported to Baptist Health Corbin Hospital where he was treated and released.

Riggs was uninjured.

Alcohol and drug usage is not suspected.

Trooper Ridener is continuing the investigation. He was assisted at the scene by Troopers from Post 11, Whitley County Sheriff’s Office, Corbin Police Department, Whitley County EMS and South Whitley County Fire Department.
