Trooper Involved Shooting In Perry County Leaves One Man Dead

Hazard, Ky.  (May 22, 2019) – A Letcher County man was fatally wounded in a shooting involving Kentucky State Police Troopers Tuesday evening.  Troopers with KSP Post 13 were attempting to locate Christopher L. Brown after receiving information that he was possibly operating a stolen vehicle in the area, and who was wanted for previous criminal offenses.  At around 6:20 p.m. Troopers observed Chris Brown in the parking lot of the Daniel Boone Motor Inn.  Brown fled from Troopers in a Jeep Cherokee and refused to stop when they activated their lights and sirens.

A pursuit ensued on KY 15 south from Hazard to the Vicco community of Perry County, where Brown drove onto a strip mine road.  Brown struck a Trooper with his vehicle, at which time Troopers fired at the Jeep.  Christopher Brown was fatally wounded and pronounced deceased at the scene by the Perry County Coroner’s Office.  One Trooper was taken to Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries received from being struck by the Jeep and was later released.  No one else was injured.

The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct an investigation into this incident.  Lieutenant Claude Little with the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is leading this investigation, in collaboration with KSP Post 13 investigators.
